Shower Wall Panels vs Custom Tile: Which Lasts in a Portland Bathroom?

By K&H Construction · Published October 28, 2026

Short answer: panels go up faster, cost less, and have few or no grout lines, but they come in limited styles and depend on seams and caulk to keep water out. Custom tile costs more and takes longer, but it can look like anything you want and lasts for decades when it’s built over a proper waterproof membrane. Either way, what’s behind the wall decides how long the shower lasts.

What “panels” actually means

“Shower wall panels” covers several products: acrylic and PVC sheets, solid-surface and cultured-stone panels, and laminate or composite panel systems. Some go over existing walls as a liner; better systems go over a properly prepared substrate, with the maker’s own trims and sealants. They’re popular for speed and price, and they’re what most one-day liner conversions use. Quality varies widely between an economy liner and a full panel system, so judge a product by its installation instructions and warranty.

What custom tile depends on

Tile and grout aren’t waterproof on their own. A tiled shower lasts because of the layer behind it. On our showers, every wet area gets a waterproof membrane and a sloped pan, with sealed penetrations at every valve, niche, and bench, installed to the system manufacturer’s spec. The tile gets the compliments; the membrane earns them.

Which fits your bathroom

  • ✓ Panels can make sense for a rental, a quick update before a sale, or a secondary bath where speed and budget matter most and the walls behind are sound. A well-made panel system installed to the manufacturer’s instructions can also suit an everyday bathroom when time or budget is tight.
  • ✓ Custom tile makes sense for the bathroom you use every day, when you want a niche, a bench, a curbless entry, or a specific look, and when you’re staying in the house.
  • ✓ Either way, check the wall first. Covering a wet or rotting wall with a new surface, panel or tile, just hides the problem. If the old shower leaked, open it up.

How we build showers

We build custom tiled showers over a waterproof membrane, and we don’t cover old walls with a liner. If demo turns up rot behind the old shower, our own dry-rot crew repairs the framing before anything goes back up. See it in the West Slope master bath (frameless glass walk-in with a bench) and the Maplewood basement bathroom (glazed green tile behind full-height glass).

Questions homeowners ask

Are shower wall panels waterproof?

The panel face is, but water can still get behind the seams, corners, and caulk joints if they’re not installed and maintained well. That’s why what’s behind any shower wall, panel or tile, matters.

Is tile harder to keep clean?

It depends on the grout. Some grouts are sealed to help them resist stains; others are made so they never need it. LATICRETE, for example, says its SPECTRALOCK PRO grouts never need to be sealed to resist staining. Follow the maker’s instructions for the grout in your shower. Large-format tile cuts down the number of lines, and a well-ventilated bathroom keeps any shower cleaner.

Can a tub-to-shower conversion use tile?

Yes. That’s how we build them: a custom tiled walk-in with real waterproofing and glass, usually in the old tub’s footprint. See tub-to-shower conversions.
