Siding fails one board at a time, and the damage you can see is rarely the whole story. K&H Construction & Remodeling repairs and replaces siding across the Portland metro: cracked, split, loose, missing, and storm-damaged boards, rotted sections, and whole walls when patching stops making sense. We check what’s behind the siding before anything gets covered up, match the new work to the old, and paint it to match, as a licensed, family-run contractor (CCB #233813).
Siding Repair & Replacement Services in Portland
Siding Repair
Cracked, split, loose, or missing boards and storm or impact damage, repaired and blended into the wall around them.
Siding Replacement
From a section to a full elevation when repairs stop making sense: weather barrier, flashing, and new siding, matched or upgraded.
Rotted Siding & Sheathing
When rot has reached the sheathing or framing, we cut back to sound wood and rebuild before new siding goes on.
Flashing & Leaks
Water getting in around windows, doors, and trim, traced and flashed so it stays out from behind the siding.
Trim & Corner Boards
Trim, corner boards, and fascia repaired or replaced along with the siding they frame.
Paint to Match
Repairs primed and painted to match, so the fix doesn’t stand out from the street.
Repair or Replace?
Most siding problems start as a repair. Replacing a few boards makes sense when the damage is local, the sheathing behind it is sound, and the new boards can be matched. Replacing a full elevation makes sense when damage keeps turning up board after board, when the weather barrier behind it has failed, or when a matching profile can’t be found. We’ll tell you which one your wall needs, and why, before you pay for anything.
Siding Projects We Have Built

The rot under a replaced window
We were on an unrelated job for these homeowners when they asked us to look at the wall below two windows. One window had already been replaced, but the leak had done its damage first: under the siding, the sill and the sheathing were rotted through, and it had never been found. We opened the wall back to sound wood, replaced the sill and framing, insulated, sheathed it with new plywood, flashed the windows, and wrapped the wall before the new siding went on.
- ✓ Rotted sill and sheathing cut back to sound wood and rebuilt
- ✓ Window flashing and house wrap corrected so the water stays out
- ✓ Finished under the estimate, in 74 labor hours, October 2026

New siding, lined up with the old
New lap siding went on the repaired wall, its courses lined up with the siding above. The homeowners asked to do the painting themselves, so this is how we left it: dry, sealed, and ready for their color.

Matched course for course
On our Sabin whole-house remodel and second-story addition, the test was the seam: the wall where the original siding meets the new work. The new siding lines up with the original course for course, the trim carries through, and our own crew finished the whole exterior, down to the paint. It won the Oregon Home Structure + Style Awards 2026: Winner, Remodel (Other).
- ✓ New siding matched to the original, course for course
- ✓ Siding, trim, and paint completed by K&H

Siding as the last layer of a structural repair
On two multi-unit condo buildings in NW Portland, the siding came off over rot that ran deep into the structure. We replaced beams and framing, corrected the flashing, put in new windows, and finished with new siding, including the cedar shingle siding here, sequenced around occupied units and coordinated with the HOA.
When siding comes off over rot on a house, the order is the same: rebuild what’s rotten, correct the moisture barrier, then side it.

New construction, same standard
The backyard ADU we built in Concordia got lap siding over a continuous weather barrier, properly lapped and taped, with the windows and sliders flashed to shed water. Repair or new build, what goes behind the siding is what makes it last.
What Happens Behind the Siding
Siding is the part you see. These are the parts that keep water out of the wall:
- ✓ Sheathing and framing checked. Anything soft or rotted gets replaced before it’s covered up again.
- ✓ A continuous weather barrier, lapped and taped, so water that gets past the siding still has a way out.
- ✓ Flashing at windows, doors, and trim, the details that fail first on older Portland houses.
- ✓ Paint that matches, so the repair disappears into the wall around it.

Siding Repair FAQ
Do you repair siding that isn’t rotten?
Yes. Cracked, split, loose, missing, and storm-damaged siding is part of what we fix, rot or no rot. We still look behind it, because a damaged board is often how water gets into the wall, and it’s cheaper to catch that now.
Can you match my existing siding?
Usually. On our Sabin remodel, the new siding lines up with the original course for course, and it’s painted to match. When an exact profile can’t be found, we’ll show you the closest options, including replacing a full wall so there’s no seam to notice.
Should I repair or replace my siding?
Repair when the damage is local and the wall behind it is sound. Replace a section or a full elevation when damage keeps turning up, the weather barrier behind it has failed, or the profile can’t be matched. We’ll tell you which one your wall needs before you pay for anything.
Do I need a permit to replace siding in Portland?
Usually not on a one- or two-family house. The City of Portland lists replacing or repairing siding that isn’t required to be fire-resistant as work that doesn’t need a building permit, though the work still has to meet code. If the repair turns structural, that part may need a permit, and we handle it.
What causes siding damage in Portland?
Water, mostly: wind-driven rain, shaded north walls, and old flashing details that let it in behind the siding. Storms, impact, and age do the rest. Where water is the cause, we find the source, or the damage comes back.
How much does siding repair cost?
It depends on how much siding, what’s behind it, and whether it can be matched. A few boards and a full elevation are different jobs, so we price yours line by line after we see it. If rot is involved, our dry rot repair cost guide shows the ranges.
Do you work on condo and HOA buildings?
Yes. Our two most recent major dry rot projects were multi-unit condo buildings in NW Portland, with structure, siding, and windows sequenced around occupied units and coordinated with the HOA.
Can storm-damaged siding go through insurance?
Often, yes. We rebuild after storm damage and write itemized estimates your adjuster can read; you’re billed directly, and what’s covered is between you and your insurer. Our insurance rebuild page has the details.
Seeing cracked or loose siding?
We’ll come look, tell you whether it’s a repair or a replacement, and put a real number on it. Free estimate, response within one business day.
Siding is one part of the outside of the house we take care of. See our dry rot repair and deck repair work, or call (971) 220-6397.
